ABOUT ABOUT

Mindfulness changes the perception of emotional and physical pain, resulting in improved pain control.

The Mindfulness-Based Chronic Pain Management (MBCPM) is a course that eases those suffering chronic pain gently into the formal practice of mindfulness. Based on the course founded over a decade ago at St Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, by Chronic Pain Consultant, Dr. Jackie Gardner-Nix, this course acknowledges the challenges chronic pain sufferers have with aspects of the more general mindfulness courses, and customizes the attitudes and formal practices to their needs.

This practice changes your relationship with suffering caused by pain in ways which can promote healing, validation and enhanced function, even leading to reduction in pain in some individuals.

Despite medications, surgeries and procedures, pain is often poorly controlled by traditional Western medicine. Prescription pain relievers frequently have undesirable side effects and lose effectiveness over time. Psychosocial interventions such as mindfulness are the recommended first-line treatment for chronic pain. Mindfulness has can reduce physical and emotional pain, leading to increased activity and an improved quality of life.
